Defaulting a student loan is not any student looks forward to. Because by defauling a student loan not only the student loses his/her rights to student loan deferment and forebearance but also may ruin his/her credit. Ideally a student should think of loan consolidation before defaulting. But some times, we still cannot prevent it. However, it is still possible to consolidate a defaulted loan. Following steps can be taken:
- The students shall made a satisfactory number of payments with his/her own efforts than being forced into it. Ideally, they should consistent payments for 3-6 months.
- Their shall not be wage garnishment orders against the student.
- If their is a garnishment, then the student shall work with a lawyer and the lender to remove that garnishment.
- Last but not least, the student shall consult a financial aid adviser and their lender to determine what workable options are.
