Minority scholarships also known as diversity scholarships by colleges are designed for men and women who belong to a minority group and excel in academics. Minority scholarship are issued by various federal and state authorities, colleges and universities, private charities and businesses. Almost all scholarship agencies believe that ethnic minorities and women are at a disadvantage when it comes to their white counterparts. Therefore, they all have scholarships for ethnic minorities as well as women. However, recently there has been a news that The College Republicans of Boston University are offering a Caucasian Achievement and Recognition Scholarship. But below is the list of the scholarships most of the institutions have :

Why Colleges and Universities Give Minority Scholarships

Minority scholarships are offered by Colleges and Universities of all sizes. There are several reasons why colleges and universities give minority scholarships.

1. To attract the bright minority students who need financial support to complete their education.

 2. To Qualify for State and Federal Grants

3. To Increase the diversity of their institution so that more students are willing to join.

4. To attract wealthy international students. The wealthy international students prefer institutions where there is already a presence of students from their native country or students whose families were originally from their native country.

How to Apply For A Minority Scholarship

Before you apply for a scholarship you need to find out what minority group do you belong to and decide on the institutions you are interested in attending. US News has a list of the top colleges for minorities which offer scholarships. As far as a minority group is concerned, you would be surprised that you may qualify for a group not only because of your ethnicity but also because of your gender orientation, physical appearance or disability. You should research this list to find your colleges. There are several ways to approach the application process:

1. Work with you high school counselor to help you prepare your scholarship application and recommendation letters to the colleges and universities.

2. Work with your high school alumni who are attending a college or university and are recipients of a scholarship.

3. Directly approach the minority office of the college and university you are interested in. You should contact them and give them a summary of your academic accomplishments.

4. If you are majoring in science, engineering or business a Fortune 500 company or a local corporation may have a scholarship. Contact local corporations or a Fortune 500 companies to see if they have any scholarships for students like you.

5. Approach the admissions department of the college and university you are interested in and see how you can get a scholarship. They may have some private scholarships as well.

6. Work with your community leaders to find out about scholarship opportunities.

NCAA Ethnic Minority and Women’s Scholarships The Ethnic Minority and Women's Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarship for Careers in Athletics program awards 13 scholarships to ethnic minorities and 13 scholarships to female college graduates entering into a sports administration or other program that will help the applicant obtain a career in intercollegiate athletics, such as athletics administrator, coach, athletic trainer or other career in intercollegiate athletics. $6000 Varies
Armenian Allied Arts Association Scholarships Armenian students who are interested in Art can earn this scholarship through an annual arts competition. Student must be in art, literature, drama, poetry, instrumental music, vocal music, and music composition. $1000 March 31st Studio City
Armenian General Athletic Union Scholarship This is a non renewable scholarship for Armenian students who are graduating high school students. $1000 May 15th Emerson
Eremian Scholarship Offered by the Armenian Relief Society, this need based scholarship is for students who are attending a 4 year college. Varies April 1st Watertown
Armenian Students Association of America Grants ASAA offers renewable grants to both graduate and undergraduate students of Armenian descent. $1500 March 15th Belmont
Google Scholarship for Hispanics

Hispanic students with great mathematical apptitude, strong interest in technology and majoring in Computer Science or Computer Engineering can get up to $10,000 in scholarship money from Google.   It may also help them get an internship at Google.

Hispanic College Fund Scholarships

Hispanic College Fund is a Washington, DC based organization which manages several scholarships for Hispanic students majoring in a variety of areas.  Hispanic students who are majoring in accounting, business, science, technology, engineering and management areas or the ones who are majoring in cooking, hospitality or the restaurant management are at an advantage to get a scholarship.  Most of the scholarships are extremely competitive therefore having a good grades and a track record of community service is a must.

ALPFA Professional Leadership Scholarship at University of Phoenix The University of Phoenix has partnered with the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA) to offer a scholarship program. Ten (10) full-tuition scholarships are offered to complete a master’s degree program at University of Phoenix. Recipients may choose to attend a University of Phoenix on-ground campus or may attend University of Phoenix online. Varies August 31st
